Surfboards in Cornwall: Study in Colour, Calm, and Coastal Rhythm

A Simple Moment That Started a Series

This series began with a photo I took during a trip to Mousehall, Cornwall a couple of years ago. It was nothing special at the time - just a row of surfboards leaning together by the beach - but something about the colours and shapes stayed with me. That image ended up becoming the starting point for a set of prints I now call Coastal Calm.

How I See Things

My architectural background is always there, especially when I’m travelling and have my camera to hand. I tend to notice structure, proportion, and rhythm in everyday things.

What drew me to the surfboards wasn’t surfing - it was their arrangement:

  • repeated curved shapes

  • bold colour against a soft horizon

  • vertical lines balancing the stillness of the sea

A Mix of Places and Influences

Cornwall in summer becomes a vivid canvas of tourism, architecture, and coastal colour - an irresistible source of inspiration for photographers and artists alike. The region’s influx of visitors brings a lively atmosphere to its harbour towns, while Cornish cottages, weathered stone walls, and crisp white facades offer subtle architectural rhythms that translate beautifully into mixed‑media work. As someone who bridges Greek and UK design sensibilities, I’m always drawn to the Mediterranean-like quality of Cornwall’s light: soft yet intensely reflective off turquoise waters and golden sands. These tones, paired with the layered textures of fishing villages and rugged cliffs, create a rich visual language that naturally lends itself to both photography and the creation of expressive paintings and prints.

As I walked around coastal villages in Cornwall, I kept noticing small details that felt connected: boats lined up in the harbour, layered rooftops, narrow lanes, crisp white steps, and the soft light that hits everything on the coast. Even though I grew up in Greece, with its bright light and simple forms, Cornwall had a similar stillness that felt familiar.

My background in architecture means I naturally look for structure - repeated shapes, clean lines, and balanced compositions. The surfboards ticked all of those boxes: curved profiles, strong colours, and a vertical rhythm set against the horizon.

From Photo to Print

When I came back to the images later, I started simplifying them. Some prints stay close to the original photos; others become more abstract by focusing on colour blocks, textures, or the overall mood. The idea was to create something calm and uncluttered - artwork that fits well in quiet interiors, from homes to hotels and coastal retreats.
